How Much Space Do I Need for a Home Lift?

Thinking about adding a home lift to your place? One of the first things you’ll need to figure out is how much space it will take up. Home lifts come in various sizes, and since every house is different, it’s important to consider a few factors to see if you have enough room. This blog will help you understand the space needed for a home lift and give you tips on where to install it.

Types of Home Lifts and Their Space Requirements

Not all home lifts are created equal. Some need more room than others. Here are a few common types:

Types of Home Lifts and Their Space Requirements

Types of Home Lifts and Their Space Requirements

Hydraulic Home Lifts

Hydraulic home lifts operate using hydraulic fluid to move the cabin up and down. However, they require a separate machine room to house the hydraulic pump and other equipment. This machine room is typically located near the lift shaft, often in a basement or garage. Hydraulic home lifts also require a pit at the base of the shaft to accommodate the hydraulic system. Due to these additional space requirements, careful planning is necessary to incorporate a hydraulic home lift into your home which always include a risk of major oil leak in the house with a 100 liter tank for instance..

Traction Home Lifts

Traction home lifts use a system of counterweights and a motor to move the lift cabin. This type of lift requires a shaft and a motor room, which is usually located at the top of the lift shaft. The motor room houses the machinery that drives the lift, including the motor and control system. Traction home lifts are highly efficient and can handle higher travel distances compared to hydraulic lifts. However, they require more headroom and a lot more space for the shaft and motor room, making them less suitable for homes with limited vertical space.

Platform Home Lifts

Platform home lifts are designed for ease of installation and minimal space requirements. These lifts use a screw-driven system, eliminating the need for a separate machine room or pit. The screw-driven mechanism allows the platform to move smoothly between floors, making it an excellent choice for homes with space constraints. Platform home lifts are available in various sizes to fit different needs, from compact models suitable for narrow spaces to larger, wheelchair-accessible models. Their flexibility and space efficiency make them a popular choice for many homeowners.

Cabin Home Lifts

Similar to platform lifts, cabin home lifts also use a screw-driven system, which means they don’t require a machine room. However, cabin home lifts come with enclosed cabins, providing a more traditional elevator experience. The screw-driven mechanism ensures a smooth and quiet operation, while the enclosed cabin offers privacy and comfort. Like platform lifts, cabin home lifts do not need a pit, making them easier to install in homes with limited space. These lifts are ideal for those who prefer the look and feel of a conventional elevator but need a more space-efficient solution.

Since Cibes’ inception in Sweden in 1947, we focus on space-efficient designs. Our platform and cabin home lifts use a screw-driven system, so we don’t require a separate machine room, pit, or extra headroom.

How Much Space Do I Need for a Home Lift?

The dimensions of a home lift shaft vary depending on the model. However, if you have 1 square meter of space, you can fit a Cibes home lift in your home. You’ll need to check the cut-out size for the home lift model you’re interested in, as this is the area needed to accommodate the lift.

Consider these three factors when planning for space: floor space, height, and pit depth. Let’s break them down:

Floor Space

If you have 1 square meter available, you can install our smallest platform home lift (Cibes V80i size 1), which has a platform size of 710x815mm and needs a minimum cut-out size of 1040x940mm. Note that this size isn’t suitable for wheelchair users and can only fit one to two people.

For a wheelchair-friendly home lift, you shall need to go for larger size platform home lift, or even the biggest size 41 measuring 1110×1415 mm. This model needs a minimum cut-out size of 1440x1540mm.

Pit Depth

Most home lifts need a pit below the elevator shaft, a space at the bottom located below the ground floor. Conventional home lifts require a pit at least 20 to 30 cm deep.

However, Cibes home lifts don’t need a pit. You can install your lift directly on the floor with an access ramp. If you prefer, you can have a small pit of 5 cm or 10 cm for cabin lifts like the Cibes V90.

Headroom

Our screw-driven home lifts don’t need a separate machine room and require minimal headroom (height from the floor to the ceiling on the top level), starting from 2300 mm. This is more space-efficient compared to conventional home lifts that need more headroom.

Even if your top floor has limited headspace or a slanted ceiling, you can opt for a half-gate instead of a full-sized door, making it easier to install.

We offer for install in the middle of the stairs location, it is very popular.

Where Can I Make Space for a Home Lift?

Cibes home lifts are compact and come in ready-made modules, making them easy to install. Here are some popular spots for installation:

In the Middle of the Stairs

A great space-saving spot for a home lift is the middle of the staircase. This often-unused area is usually spacious enough for our compact home lifts, making for a seamless integration that enhances your home’s look, especially when you opt for a full glass max shaft.

On the Outside of Your Home

If you can’t find space indoors, you can install a Cibes outdoor home lift without losing any indoor space. Our weather-proof outdoor solution offers convenient access from outside to inside all year round. For fully outdoor access, we provide door canopies equipped with IP rated call buttons and security access control of your choice (passcode, keycard, face scan, finger scan).

In the Middle of a Room

Want your home lift to be the centerpiece of your home? Placing it in the middle of your living room not only looks stylish but also boosts your property value.

The Garage

The garage is a practical spot for a home lift because it’s a common entry point. But since garages are often outdoors and exposed to weather, we recommend a weather-proof Cibes outdoor home lift.

In a Corner, Near Frequently Used Rooms

You can turn almost any corner into a space for a Cibes home lift. Pick a spot that conveniently takes you to frequently used areas, like from the kitchen downstairs to your bedroom upstairs. This is especially handy for owners with limited mobility.

What Is the Most Space-Efficient Home Lift?

When it comes to space efficiency, not all home lifts are equal. At Cibes, we design home lifts that don’t require major construction or take up much space. Our most compact home lifts require as little as 1 square meter.

The screw-driven design of all Cibes home lifts means there’s no need for a separate machine room, pit, or large headroom. Despite its small size, the Cibes home lift has a passenger footprint of 70%.
